How to Silence Your Inner Critic… Once and For All!

How to Silence Your Inner Critic… Once and For All!

Are you your own worst critic? Is your negative self talk sabotaging your success? Do you put yourself down for not achieving enough?

Here are 3 ways to silence your inner critic once and for all:

Own Up

Before you can change, stop or improve anything you do, first you need to be aware of and acknowledge that something needs to change.  Without an awareness and acknowledgement, all appears to be well and we continue to think, feel and behave in the same ways, and achieve the same levels of performance.

The first step is to become aware of your self talk to see whether it is serving or sabotaging you.  Start to pay attention to what you say to yourself.  Notice the words you use, and notice how you speak about yourself to others.  Look for repeated words and phrases.  Are they positive or negative? Do they empower or disempower you?

Then acknowledge any changes you need to make to your self talk.  Ask yourself if you are really ready to let these go.  Is the negative self talk serving any benefit at all?  Does it keep you small so you stay safe? Does it keep you in your comfort zone? Are you now ready to step out of the comfort zone?

Please be honest with yourself.  Awareness is the first step in your journey.  The next step is your commitment to making the necessary changes.  Then, it is time to permanently let go of the negative self talk.

Stop Feeding the Negativity

Once you permanently address the negative self talk and silence the inner critic, you then need to maintain the positive self talk.  This is where you need to be aware of your environment – what you watch, listen to and read.  Who do you surround yourself with – are they positive or negative?

Do you surround yourself with doomsayers who kick you when you are already down?  Are people around you jealous of your achievements and successes, and then sabotage you? Or do they cheer you on when you need extra support to overcome hurdles and challenges?

For example, if you are part of a supportive culture at work, you will probably feel more confident in asking for help and support when you need it. In turn, this will assist you with being more successful. Alternatively, if there is a negative culture at work, you may avoid speaking with people or asking for help, which could have you feel isolated and unsupported. This could negatively impact on your confidence, performance and success.

Without a direction and goals to motivate us, we can be more easily distracted by other people’s negativity and demands. Therefore, it is also important to have a clear direction for your life, with specific goals. Make sure that your goals truly inspire and motivate you. With a compelling direction and goals, any negativity from others is less likely to affect you.

Get into Action

In addition to surrounding yourself with a positive environment to maintain positive self talk, you also need to get into action.  Without action, new negative self talk and fear can creep in.

Rather than waiting to win the lottery, to receive a windfall, to have someone else do the work for you, or for a magic pill, create your own luck by taking action and making things happen. Avoid expecting things to change without doing anything towards changing them.  Enough of the right action will build momentum towards success, which will in turn reinforce the positive self talk.

Permanently silencing your inner critic has many benefits.  You will feel empowered, you will achieve more, you will have greater happiness and success and you will inspire others as to how much more is possible.  Empower yourself today with your FREE NLP resources and your FREE Discovery session and silence your inner critic once and for all!

Are You Putting in the Effort and Not Seeing Results?

Are You Putting in the Effort and Not Seeing Results?

Do you put in a lot of work and effort in your career/business, relationships and life, yet have little to show for it?  Are you getting discouraged with the lack of results your efforts are producing? Would you like to stop feeling stressed and frustrated, and have greater confidence, fulfillment and success?

The Hard Way or the Easy Way?

Sometimes we do things the hard way because it is all that we know.  We are conditioned from early in life by those around us and often we copy our parents, teachers, peers, role models and others in our environment.  Sometimes the behaviours and patterns we copy are ineffective and sabotaging.  In turn, these sabotage our success regardless of how much effort we put into our career/business, relationships and life.  We and other people don't know what we don't know.

For example, if we grew up in an environment where the predominant beliefs and values were around scarcity, we can take on board those beliefs and values on a subconscious level.  In turn, the scarcity thinking sabotages our relationship with money and our success.  Yet, working on values and beliefs alone is often insufficient to create a long term change as there are over 60 individual drivers of behaviour.  One in particular works on the deepest level of transformation as I discovered as part of my PhD research, and from working with thousands of clients (and then developed proven multi award-winning, advanced behavioural change techniques to empower our clients with profound transformations).

Having limited ways of thinking keeps us small regardless of how much effort we put in…. one way or another they will find a way to sabotage our success for as long as they remain.  That is the hard way to do career/business, relationships and life.

The easier way is to identify and let go of the subconscious patterns of sabotage at the deepest level, so that we free up our thinking and behaviour to be, do and have what we truly desire.  When all the limitations disappear, there is an easier flow to achieving confidence, happiness and success.

Willpower or Natural Motivation?

Some people use willpower to motivate themselves to put in the effort.  Willpower is great if you can sustain it for more than the short term.  Most people can sustain willpower for only several days or weeks.  Then the willpower disappears and the old habits kick in.  This is because all habits reside at the subconscious level and hence, need to be addressed on a subconscious level in order for the change to last.

We all know of someone who has been on a diet or wanted to change some other habit with willpower.  How long did they last on the diet, their new exercise routine, their new time management habits, etc purely with willpower?   Probably only days or weeks.

The easier alternative is to develop a natural internal motivation.  No willpower is required for this.  Instead, you develop a consistent internal motivation that you sustain naturally, and that keeps you motivated long term.  It is natural and you find yourself automatically doing things because it is who you are.

Effort versus Focused Action

Another thing that some people miss is that effort is very different to focused action.  Effort is often doing lots of things, anything and everything.  It can be action for the sake of action or scattered action.  Often it can be unproductive, exhausting and ineffective.  This is where a lot of people burn out, lose motivation and give up.  It is all too hard and too much work.

Focused action is knowing the right action to take to achieve your desired outcomes.  Knowing which strategies work for your outcomes, which ones to do more of, which ones to do less of, which ones to stop, which ones to improve, which ones to keep doing.  Focused action is focused on your outcomes, rather than just any action.  Focused action is mastering the "how" of communication, personal and professional relationships and success, rather than the "what".  Focused action is far more rewarding because it produces faster results, which in turn builds motivation, confidence and more focused action.

Remember, enough of the right action breeds success!

Would you like some help with doing things more easily, with having natural motivation and taking focused action, so you see faster results?  Here are some free resources to help you on your journey to greater confidence, motivation and personal and professional success.  You can also leave your questions below or email me for a confidential reply.

Supporting World Mental Health Day

Supporting World Mental Health Day

10th October 2018

World Mental Health Day is on the 10th October 2018, with the overall objective of raising awareness and support of mental health issues around the world.  Young people and mental health in a changing world is the theme of World Mental Health Day 2018.

The World Health Organisation notes that as we go through changes in our lives, they can be both exciting times and stressful and apprehensive at the same time.

They add " In some cases, if not recognized and managed, these feelings can lead to mental illness. The expanding use of online technologies, while undoubtedly bringing many benefits, can also bring additional pressures, as connectivity to virtual networks at any time of the day and night grows."

Because our vision is to create an empowered society, and over the past 18 years we have been dedicated to helping people improve their mental and emotional health, and personal and professional success, Qt continues to support World Mental Health Day.

If you know of family, friends or colleagues who are stressed, anxious, depressed, have low self-esteem, lack confidence and would like some support, please offer them these free resourcesAlternatively, ask them to email me for a confidential reply.  Thank you for your support in empowering others.

Are you feeling out of control?

Are you feeling out of control?

Is your career/business, relationship or life feeling like it is out of control?  Would you like to know how to regain control?

Are You In Control?

Are you in control of your emotions?  When you feel anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt, resentment, betrayal, loneliness, etc. are these emotions in or out of proportion to the personal or professional situation you are in?

Do you take charge of your thoughts and are they mainly positive or negative?  When a negative thought comes in, do you stop it or entertain it and allow it to spiral into more negative thoughts?

Are bad habits (e.g. procrastination, distraction, smoking, drinking too much, overeating, etc.) controlling you or are you in charge of only positive behaviours and habits?  Having answered these questions, do you feel like you are in control of yourself or not?

Whom/What Are You Controlling?

Some people who feel out of control themselves, unconsciously seek to control other people.  For example, by getting angry, bullying, creating dramas, buying gifts, etc., they unconsciously create a dynamic where they are in control in that personal or professional relationship.  Other people who feel out of control, unconsciously seek to control things and their environment.  For example, overeating, drinking too much, being obsessed by games, etc.

At the end of the day, these people are ultimately not in control of themselves.  That is the real issue.  Until that is addressed, they will keep creating the same dynamics with people, things and their environment.

Control versus Influence

You are personally responsible for four things:  how you think, how you feel, how you act and how you influence others.  Other people are also responsible for four things:  how they think, how they feel, how they act and how they influence you and others.

When you start to focus on how you can control what others say, think and do, you are focusing on what is beyond your control.  Because this is beyond your control and you want to control it, you may feel frustrated or angry about the situation e.g. sitting in bumper to bumper traffic and being unable to control the traffic.

Instead, focus on what you can control – changing your thoughts, feelings, actions and communication.  How could you take more charge of how you think, feel and act so that you are happier and more fulfilled both personally and professionally?  How can you improve your communication and avoid misunderstandings and conflict?

Regaining Control

The first thing to realise is that people who trust themselves, trust others and the flow of life. Therefore, they find no need to control other people and situations.  It is only people who have trust issues that feel the need to control others and situations.  These people need to learn to trust themselves first in order to trust others.

Focus on you and taking charge of how you think, feel and act so you regain control of your behaviour and your life.  Address past emotions, limiting beliefs and internal conflicts, so that you can take charge of creating a career/business, relationship and life you truly desire.  Also learn how to be a more effective communicator and leader so you avoid frustrations, misunderstandings and disagreements in your personal and professional relationships.
