How to Stop Frustrating Conversations

- Would you like to stop feeling frustrated when communicating with others?
- Do you wish to avoid disagreements and misunderstandings in person, on the phone, via email or text?
Recently, I have had a number of people reach out for help with overcoming frustration when communicating with family, friends, partners, colleagues and managers.
Their Response is Your Feedback
In NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), we believe that the response you receive from other people to your communication is your feedback as to the effectiveness of your communication. If other people are misunderstanding you, this is your feedback to change your approach.
This is where it is important to communicate in ways that match the preference of the person with whom you are communicating. Each person has over 60 unconscious drivers of their personality and behaviour, including their preferred communication styles.
Feeling Frustrated When Communicating?
If you feel frustrated when you communicate with other people, check the following:
- Is the emotion of frustration in proportion to the situation? If so, refer to the second point below. If not, and you overreact with frustration, address the emotion of frustration so that it is in proportion.
- Are you continuing to communicate in the same ways and you keep getting the same response? If so, be flexible and adapt your communication to the preferred communication styles of the other person.
Remember, focus on what is within your control, and how you are communicating and influencing other people. Rather than focusing on what is out of your control (including other people’s behaviour), focus on how you can change your approach to other people.
This means stepping out of your comfort zone, and communicating in different ways. The more communication techniques you have, the greater your success in achieving a win-win outcome.
