Stop Costly Habits that Sabotage Your Finances

stop costly habits
  • Would you like to stop costly habits that sabotage your finances?
  • Have you tried to change bad habits or addictions in the past using will power only to discover the change did not last?
  • How much are procrastination, shopping addiction, smoking, other habits or addictions costing you?

This time of year is a good time to think about your habits, and how they impact your finances.

Are Your Habits Empowering?

A habit is any activity which is developed through reinforcement or repetition.  It is an ingrained behaviour we run on a regular basis e.g. sleeping, walking, eating, drinking, etc. Many of our habits are formed unconsciously, out of our conscious awareness.

Some habits serve you well in achieving your outcomes and goals. Meanwhile, others can sabotage you and be a real distraction from what you really want to be doing.  Start observing your habits, including your spending and income generating habits.  Do your habits help you to stay focused on the task at hand or do they distract you?  Are you habits supporting or sabotaging your goals?

Common Costly Habits

While there are potentially many costly habits, a common one is procrastination.  Some people have mastered the art of putting off doing certain tasks. This is despite knowing that they will be worse off for the delay.

Research has shown that around 15% to 20% of adults regularly put off activities that would be better done right away. Around 40% of people have experienced a financial loss as a result of procrastination. Procrastinators have higher stress levels and more severe health problems than people who act right away.

Examples of Costly Habits

Below are some examples of costly habits and addictions our clients have had, and how transforming those habits and addictions quickly has saved them money both in the short term and long term.

A professional was smoking many cigarettes each day for many years. After stopping that habit, they saved themselves over $12,000 each year. That adds up to a $600,000 saving over 50 years!

A business owner kept putting off a key business decision.  This procrastination cost $10,000 per month plus much emotional stress.  Once we helped to stop the procrastination and the business owner took action, this saved $120,000 each year, dramatically reduced stress levels and freed up focus and energy to grow the business.

A CEO was drinking too much to cope with stress at work and in life. After moderating that habit to only drink 1 or 2 glasses on the weekends, they saved themselves over $25,000 a year. That adds up to a $1.5 million saving over 60 years!

A professional was resorting to retail therapy to deal with emotions and past traumas. The shopping addiction caused overspending over $3,000 per month on things that were not needed nor used. We helped to quickly address the addiction, and the shopping reduced dramatically. The professional calculated that this has now saved them over $36,000 per year, and over $1.8 million over 50 years!

Now think about how much your habits are costing you in money, lost time, stress, frustration, unhappiness, etc.

Addictions versus Habits

While some of our habits can serve us, most addictions have adverse effects.  An addiction results from a person using a substance (e.g. chocolate, alcohol, food, etc.) or engaging in an activity (e.g. shopping, social media, online games, etc.) that can be pleasurable.  However, the continuation of these then becomes compulsive and interferes with everyday activities, work, relationships, health, etc.

People who have developed an addiction may be unaware that their behaviour is out of control, and is causing problems for themselves and others.

What Lies Beneath?

Beneath every major disempowering habit and addiction are deeper issues that are causing that habit and addiction to continue. These have the person run the same habits and addictions over and over. Accurately identifying and addressing ALL the deeper issues permanently and quickly at a deep unconscious level is the key to successfully stopping these for long term change.

Regardless of whether you wish to stop a bad habit or an addiction, both of these are behaviours that are created and stored at an unconscious level.   Therefore, it is best to address these by working directly with the unconscious mind, rather than using willpower. Most people give up making changes with willpower as it is too hard. Unconscious change is easier, quicker and produces long term success.
